350.org Asia urged the Japanese government to raise its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target to 81% by 2035 from 2013 levels, saying that the previous proposal to target a 60% emissions reduction is insufficient to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C and prevent climate chaos.
Saying that Japan’s climate future is on the line, 350.org Asia launched a Tweet Storm calling on Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to reject the country’s weak targets and instead adopt bold, science-aligned targets.
In an action in Tokyo, 350.org Japan joined the youth and other civil society groups in urging the Global Environment Subcommittee of the Central Environmental Council, Innovation of Industrial Structure Council, and the Working Group for the Study of Medium- and Long-Term Global Warming Countermeasures of the Global Environment Subcommittee to revise Japan’s draft climate targets. The said committees are set to approve the emissions target as part of the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution, due for submission in February 2025.
