INTRODUCTION

Bangladesh is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. Rising sea levels threaten to submerge around one-third of the country, while extreme weather events and prolonged droughts affect millions each year.

It is estimated that 13 million people are at risk from being displaced in the next 30 years due to climate impacts.

Even as climate change threatens Bangladesh’s future survival, the country remains stuck in the fossil fuel era of the past. Expensive gas and coal projects have sunk the economy, led to energy shortages, and driven up the prices of basic commodities. People suffer while fossil fuel investors reap the profits.

It’s clear: our reliance on fossil fuels not only worsens climate change but also makes our energy system expensive, unreliable, and unsustainable.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Last year, the power of the people overthrew an undemocratic state. After 16 years of being voiceless, people now have a chance to exercise their fundamental political right to vote.

It’s time to spark a renewable energy revolution to secure a clean and affordable energy future for all.

WHY WE NEED TO VOTE RENEWABLES

  1. Energy security & independence: Community-based renewable energy will reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and tap into our own, vast energy potential.
  2. Environmental & climate benefits: Transitioning to renewables reduces carbon emissions, mitigates climate change impacts, and protects Bangladesh’s vulnerable communities from climate disasters.
  3. Political empowerment & rights: Energy is a fundamental right. By advocating for renewables, citizens can hold leaders accountable and ensure policies reflect the needs of the people.
  4. Cost-effective & sustainable: Solar, wind, and biomass energy are already more affordable and will become even more sustainable in the long run than fossil fuels.
  5. Job creation & equitable growth: Investing in renewables can help create thousands of new jobs and foster equitable development.

Support Green New Deal in Bangladesh

In 2021, we have ambitious plans to build a movement for a Green New Deal in Bangladesh. We need your help in demanding the government to cancel all proposed and existing coal plant projects.

Together, we can push the country to move towards a 100% renewable energy system by 2050.

A Green New Deal For Bangladesh must exclude gas.

The Power Ministry’s recent proposal to cancel coal plants is long overdue and a positive step towards an efficient energy system for Bangladesh. But switching from coal to LNG will keep the status quo. Emissions from natural gas are the same as coal. Instead of switching from coal to gas to renewable energy, Bangladesh can make a just transition to renewable energy.

To keep global temperatures within 1.5-degree Celsius, any plans to build new fossil fuel infrastructure must be canceled. Coal and LNG should be kept out of any future energy master plan. The government must revoke approvals of the proposed construction of new coal-plants or ones that have exceeded the contract period. Most of these coal plants will not be made by 2025. In order to reduce power and energy emissions to zero by 2050, we must transition to 100% renewable energy by shutting down all fossil fuel-based power plants.

Bangladesh needs to take immediate and effective steps to seriously address the climate breakdown risks and move towards a 100% renewable energy system by 2050.
